The Consuming Fire
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:28-29
I watched the wood burn, slandering each flame
with discourteous crackle; leaves curl tight
fists against their red tormentor; dark night
cover glowing sunglory in black shame.
I watched the blind beasts chase hope through the wild
in search of Life… No! In search of water,
(though rivers run to escape the slaughter);
watched earth to coal turn, joyful spark reviled.
The unsouled shun divinity’s bright blaze,
revere dispassionate Nature, aspire
to the existence of Cold Things, they trade
Eternity for trust in the wind, praise
rain (though always by shifting clouds betrayed)
and forever flee the Consuming Fire.
